How do you tell your boss that you do not wish to pay and attend a team building baseball game?

By Emily On November 9, 2009 Under Challenge Programming

My boss wants us to pay for and attend a baseball game which is for team building outside of work. I am not interested in baseball, paying for team building nor spending time with my boss or co-workers outside of work. So, how do I tell her I do not wish to participate without writing my own ticket out of a job?

may as well quit your job then so you wont have to be fired down the road then. sure, i doubt you would be fired over that one thing. but youre going to turn into the liability really quickly if you do that. look at it this way, you already spend hours in a place you dont want to be to make your boss happy so you can continue to have a job. whats a few more hours in a place where you can have a hot dog and a coke? good luck

They can’t make you make you go to a game and no pay for it. Tell them they are paying for your ticket, as you are finacially tight on money. Unless they want to give you a raise… :P

I would write a little note saying that it sounds like fun but finances do not permit going right now. Offer to send cole slaw or something for the tailgate party. Try to sound like you regret not going and be prepared to go if they pay. (It could be fun)

As an employer of a team – about 25 strong today…

I would never force my employees to pay for a thing.

We had an opportunity to have some fun last month – long distance – and I wanted everyone to pitch in for a big party bus so we could drink and not worry about driving…

Someone brought up a better idea that each person should bring a designated drinker or driver…

and the trip was a success…

those that did not attend missed out on a lot of fun…but there were no informal punishments…

We had 4 that chose to skip out.

Let your boss know you won’t be attending.

Tell her you have too much things going on right now. Pehaps next year, but your already getting stressed trying to make time to do everything as it is.

Boy, do I know how you feel. But if you view your job as a career, then for your own good, you should try to attend, pay for it, and benefit from it. I know it isn’t easy, but if you don’t participate then your boss is going to think that you are not a team player and not interested in becoming one.

they can’t force you to do that. and they can’t fire you if you don’t. if they do they open themselves to a lawsuit.
